Flickr – Host Your Images Online

FlickrFlickr is an image-hosting site that allows its users to upload and share with their friends and the world at large their favorite photo albums.

Flickr offers two types of accounts, Free and Pro. The free accounts don’t allow the option of downloading the image files, and only the most 200 recent photos are indexed in the account’s homepage. Free accounts are also subject to deletion after a period of 90 days of inactivity. Once upgraded to the Pro plan, users gain the ability to download the files for previously uploaded images, and they are no longer subject to the inactivity deletion rules.

Flickr was initially launched in February 2004 by Stewart Butterfield with his then-wife Caterina Fake. The site was acquired by Yahoo! in March 2005 (the reported acquisition cost was $35 million). On 16 June 2007, Yahoo! Photos issued a press release stating that its service would end on September 2007, in order to focus the company’s efforts on Flickr.

In 2008, Stewart and Caterina resigned their Yahoo jobs. At the end of November 2010, Yahoo was on the verge of a major layoff affecting 10%-20% of its workforce and Flickr was specifically named as a target for these layoffs. In August 2011 Flickr reported that it continues to see strong adoption for the service; it stated that the site hosts more than 6 billion images and that this number continues to grow steadily.

Xtranormal – Online Movie Maker

Xtranormal

Xtranormal is a site that allows users to create short animation videos based on a text script. The text can be annotated with additional information, such as a background scene, custom appearance details for the involved characters or emoticons which reflect character gestures.

The company offers both downloadable software products as well as a web-based video creation service. Until 2011 it claims to have created over 10 million videos, and the counter keeps going. The site managed to attract a strong audience with hundreds of thousands of visitors in each of the last 12 months.

Xtranormal was funded in 2006 having Richard Szalwinski as one of the initial co-founders and CEO. He left the company in 2010 and Graham Sharp took over as the new CEO. The company currently has 30 employees according to CrunchBase.

Evernote – Remember Everything

Evernote

Evernote makes it easy to remember big and small things from your life using your computer, phone, and the web. It is basically an advanced to-do tracker with native apps for Windows, iPhone or the web, that keep themselves synchronized over the Internet.

Evernote has the ability to search for text contained inside the uploaded pictures (you can see this feature in action here) or it can act as a publishing platform. It offers two plans: free and premium. The later is available for $5/month or $45/year and it offers uploads up to 1 GB each month, top priority support and advanced collaboration features.

The Evernote’s website traffic experienced significant growth in the last months; the company also managed to land $50 million dollars in new funding from Sequoia Capital, which confirms that things are going well for the company nowadays.

Although Evernote seems to be a well-established company, things weren’t always that good, especially at the beginning. Evernote co-founder Phil Libin shared during a video interview how close the company came to a full stop: a $500’000 investment arrived just hours before a planned shut-down as Evernote was previously unable to meet payroll expenses.

Wufoo – Create Forms Online

Wufoo

Wufoo allows users to design online forms from within their browsers. Forms can be built by indicating what fields should appear in them. Wufoo takes these specs and automatically publishes the form on the web, taking care of collecting the replies and presenting them to the form’s author in various formats.

When someone designs a form with Wufoo, it automatically builds the database, backend and scripts needed to make collecting and understanding data easy, fast and fun. Because Wufoo hosts everything, all that’s needed is a browser, an Internet connection and a few minutes to build a form and start using it right away.

Wufoo’s tiered monthly plans range from $14.95/month to $199.95/month and the prices are based on the number of forms, the number of entries that can be submitted per month, the amount of disk space used for handling files and various other factors. There’s also a free version available, with limited capabilities.

In April 2011 Wufoo signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by SurveyMonkey, its main competitor at that time. According to the merger agreement both services will continue to operate and the forms will continue to function as before. Since then, Wufoo’s traffic seems to be on an upward trend according to Compete; it seems the merger was successful for all the parties involved. An interview with the Wufoo co-founder Kevin Hale (describing the history of the company at large) is available here.

Carbonite – Backup Your Computer’s Files

Carbonite

Carbonite provides an automatic online backup service with anytime, anywhere access. By installing the Carbonite utility (Windows or Mac required) the hard-disk files will be automatically backed up in the background on the Carbonite servers by using the computer’s Internet connection.

When a file gets deleted, Carbonite keeps a backup for 30 days to allow users to recover it in case of accidental deletions. Older versions of modified files are kept for 90 days for similar reasons. The backups are available online on Carbonite.com or directly from the desktop. The restore process is the easiest in the industry (the company focused on it as it believes that the only reason to back up files is to be able to get them back quickly when needed).

Plans start at $59 per computer per year with the first 15 days offered as a free trial. There are two plan types available: the home plan, which has no size limitations, and the small business plan which offers a backup space of 250 GB by default. The minimum price level translates to $5 per month, a value proposition that most users will find decently priced for having their valuable files properly backed up.

In August 2011, Carbonite had its Initial Public Offering on the US market. The deal almost never happened due to poor market conditions but it was saved in the final hours according to MarketWatch. Carbonite has yet to turn a profit, despite rising revenues, as it invests aggressively in acquiring new customers. In 2010 it spent $24 million on advertising – as much as $55 per customer acquisition, an amount justified considering that their customers stick with them – on average – for 5 years and the minimum plan is $59 per year. It’s difficult to predict when they’ll start to make a profit, but if they continue to keep their customers, on average, for 5 years, then it’s just a matter of time until they recover the initial customer acquisition costs.

You can see more Carbonite commercials on their YouTube channel.

Pinterest.com – Publish and Discover Images Online

Pinterest.com

Pinterest.com defines itself as a virtual pinboard: it lets people organize and share all the beautiful things they find on the web. Users can pin images on their own boards or they can explore the content uploaded by the other site members.

An image added to Pinterest is called a pin; it can be added from a website using the Pin It button, or it can be uploaded from the users’ computers. Pins are organized in boards – collections of pins on the same theme or subject.

Images can be re-pined by users on their own boards. Each pin has a comments section where users can discuss interactively about the content. The site’s main page shows recently uploaded pins which were ranked highly in the community. It also offers a search function to discover pins using specific search keywords.

Pinterest is a simplified Tumblr with Instapaper-like web clipping. It combines the social networks’ sharing aspect with modern publishing and visualization technologies to create a unique experience in exploring and sharing images online. We invite you to give it a try.
